All aboard for the May Day cabaret

MAY day might not be shaping up to be a scorcher — but across the river at Oran Mor, there will at least be laughter (with a political slant).

The Great May Day Cabaret takes place on the Monday bank holiday, allowing you to make the most of that extra long lie.

The event follows Glasgow’s May Day march and rally — which might give you an idea of what’s to come, with a line up including comedian and activist Mark Thomas, Marxist magician (yes, really) Ian Saville and Co-op brass band and former BBC young folk musicians Siobhan Miller and Jeana Leslie.

They’re joined by political songster Arthur Johnstone, singer Dave Anderson and Fraser Spiers on the harmonica in a show acting as a hub for the Friends of May Day activities spanning two weeks around the date. The night is supported by a number of events still to come, including anti-racism film From Cable Street to Brick Lane on Friday (May 3) at Partick Burgh Halls, a concert dedicated to the late, great Matt McGinn and the Scottish Left Review, a comedy fundraiser on Saturday, at the Stand.

That’s a lot of lefty fun for one bank holiday — but if you happen to lean in that direction, we suggest a hop across the river for the night.
