An Indian flavour formusic fans

The group, which combines Indian music with its Western counterparts, is currently touring around the country and will be stopping off at the New Lanark Institute on November 7 for what is sure to be an extremely eclectic evening.

Music in Lanark chairman Jamie Hill said: “They are touring one of the most ambitious and exciting intercultural programmes ever assembled as part of The Year of Creative Scotland.

“Music in Lanark is proud to be a part of this tour.

“We think that the audience will really go for it. The committee thought it would be a great addition to the programme.

“The group will present new works by legendary American pioneer Terry Riley, British modernist master Nigel Osborne, India’s greatest composer Shirish Korde and Simon Thacker, performed by four world renowned musicians.

“The band features the beautiful voice of Japjit Kaur, leading tabla (Indian percussion) player Sarvar Sabri, who has a musical lineage stretching back 10 generations and acclaimed violinist Jacqueline Shave.

“They combine two of the world’s greatest and most diverse musical cultures, creating powerful and inspiring new music using the classical, folk and spiritual traditions of India as a basis to innovate.”

The band have been winning fans throughout their tour of Scotland.

Indeed a recent performance at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, as part of the city’s Jazz Festival, was met with huge critical acclaim.

Jamie added: “I was at the jazz festival performance and it was absolutely fantastic.

“It was something completely different and very enjoyable.

“I was surprised how well the group worked.”

Music in Lanark presents Svara-Kanti at the New Lanark Institute on Saturday, November 10, beginning at 7.30pm.
