Carluke teacher’s play Fourteen to One on stage at East Kilbride

For the production was written by Carluke’s Annyse Ewing, of Avon Avenue, directed by her husband Jim and stars Carluke actors Nomaan Khan and David Edment.

Annyse said: “I wanted to write a play that people of all ages would enjoy and there is a lot of humour between the characters.

“But I also wanted to challenge some serious topics, like murder, knife crime, racism and sectarianism.”

Annyse, a teacher of English and Guidance at Lanark Grammar, is delighted that Bookends Theatre Group agreed to take on the play, and that 15 actors and actresses have come together to play the jury members.

Their job is to decide the verdict at the end of a murder trial. With the odds stacked against him, a young Muslim man has been accused of killing a Protestant white girl and the jury has to decide whether to convict him.

Director Jim added: “This is a really entertaining play. We want the audience to experience a bit of voyeurism by seeing what it is like to be part of a murder jury.

“We want to make this as real as possible and provide great entertainment value.

“On the jury there is a wide variety of people including Rangers, Celtic, Motherwell and Partick Thistle supporters.”
