Carluke’s Kirkton Players win British Championship

Having already been crowned Scottish champions Carluke’s talented Kirkton Players have now been crowned winners of the British One Act play Competition.

The Players travelled down to Wales to perform the two-handed play In The Blinking Of An Eye, by Jeremy Hylton-Davies.

And despite being up against tough competition from drama groups representing the host nation, England and Northern Ireland, the Players secured the title and the Howard de Walden Trophy for the second time in four years and for a record fifth time overall.

Gerry Burns, from the Kirkton Players, said: “It was a very tough competition because all the other drama groups had won through their respective finals so it was always going to be tough.

“The competition opened on Friday evening with the team from Wales and then Northern Ireland performing before ourselves and the English performed on Saturday.

“The English group in particular were very good. They performed extracts from the Tempest by Shakespeare.

“It was always going to be close but thankfully we managed to win and it was a great feeling because it was a real team effort.
