Celebrating Giffnock Theatre Players' milestone year

Giffnock Theatre Players recently marked their 70th birthday with a celebratory dinner in Whitecraigs Rugby Club.

Since their very first production in 1949 – Grand National Night – this popular south side club has been presenting three productions a year, covering everything from Shakespeare to farce, whodunnits to period drama.

More than 50 members past and present turned out to mark the club’s milestone and to reminisce and share memories.

GTP chair Glynis Poole welcomed everyone and recalled some classic moments from the club’s history.

Guest speaker Walter Paul, who has directed many plays for the club, regaled the audience with some hilarious acting stories and to cap a perfect evening former member Jamie Walker, fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe, got folk on to the dance floor with a terrific vocal performance from the Great American Songbook.

Guests had plenty of opportunity to chat with one another and to look at some of the history memorabilia on display.

Member David Pearson said: “Whitercraigs Rugby Club proved the perfect venue for our celebrations with staff extremely helpful in ensuring the success of our night.

And the first class three-course meal, courtesy of Melissa Beck of East Renfrewshire Golf Club, struck the right note with everybody. We look forward to our 80th!”

Meantime, it’s on with the 71st season.

The Cripple of Inishmaan is being presented in Webster’s Theatre from Wednesday, October 31 to Saturday, November 3 at 7.30pm with Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. The January production will be that classic thriller Dial M For Murder, and in April the group is presenting The Diary of Anne Frank. This is a new version written by Wendy Kesselman. Extra readers can purchase tickets for all three productions for £35 - a substantial saving.
