Enjoying the fresh air, at work on the Lesmahagow allotments.

That is the question being asked by a new group formed last month.

It meets every second Tuesday morning and is led by experienced gardeners from Lesmahagow Development Trust and Clydesdale Community Initiatives (CCI).

Volunteers can put their green fingers to good use or learn new skills from the team. Newcomers are welcome, and there are always plenty of simple jobs that can be done and someone on hand to give pointers and advice.

There is plenty of work of varying levels to keep everyone busy while getting fresh air, learning new skills, meeting new people and getting their hands dirty.

Volunteers of all ages are needed to help in essential maintenance such as planting, pruning, and weeding.

Some allotment plots are also available to members of the public. Email info@

The allotments have been designed to be accessible with ramps, and there is a tool cabin and toilets.

Group organiser Helen Thomson, of CCI, said: “Tools are provided, but you do need to come suitably dressed for outdoor work in all weathers with a packed lunch and be prepared to get dirty.

“Support and advice will be provided throughout. It’s a great help if volunteers can bring hand tools if they have some, but we will have some available to borrow, and we will provide hot drinks.”

The allotments were completed in 2015 as part of a Clyde and Avon Valley Landscape Partnership initiative.

Partnership programme manager Donna Marshall commented: “Allotment sites often replicate the community spirit that is unfortunately lost in many areas.

“Volunteering outdoors is also a great way of improving your physical health and mental wellbeing.”
