Customer calls convince Newlands Homes Bakery to keep baking

When the Covid-19 pandemic arrived in Scotland, East Renfrewshire’s Newlands Home Bakery initially took the step of shutting up shop to comply with the Government’s social distancing guidelines.

But customers kept calling – prompting the popular bakery to have rethink.

Alisdair Irvine, of Newlands Home Bakery, explained: “For our employees’ safety, when the lockdown was announced, we decided to close our shops. However, we received several customer requests asking if we were still open for business so we decide to have a rethink.

“With management working in the main bakery, no public access to the site and a large space available to us, it was possible to continue creating freshly baked breads, cakes and pastry products every day.

“We decided to offer a small selection of our most popular products for local home delivery.

“The service has proved such a success that we have extended our offer to customers who live outside our delivery service reach and so we are now offering a collection service available at our Thornliebank shop, with only one person allowed in the shop at any time.”

Alisdair said it was interesting seeing what bakery basics and treats people were craving at this time. Most popular has been Newlands’ sourdough bread.

The bakery has also been supplying a sourdough starter pack for customers to make at home, and flour has been popular as so many of customers have been baking at home.

Alisdair added: “We wanted to go further than just offering freshly baked quality products to our customers.

“We have been donating lots of cakes and pastries to Kilbryde Hospice to say thank you to the NHS for working so hard during this difficult time.”
