Glasgow TGI Fridays restaurants could close after popular chain enters administration

Liberty Bar and Restaurant Group, which own the TGI Fridays chain, has filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators, which could see the popular brand wiped from the high street and left workers facing an uncertain future, just days before Christmas.

It means the restaurant in Glasgow’s four restaurants, including one on Buchanan Street, could be at risk of closure - more than half of the seven branches across Scotland.

Phil Broad, president of TGI Fridays international franchising, said: "The Directors of TGI Fridays UK can confirm that a notice of intent to appoint administrators was filed with the court.

"This step brings the new owners, who assumed control last month, closer to securing and strengthening the long-term future of TGI Fridays in the UK. "

The most recent administration is the latest in a long line of financial struggles for the brand, which has operated in the UK since 1986. Last year, TGI Fridays Fort Kinnaird closed its doors alongside 34 other restaurants, almost halving its presence in the UK, after it entered administration before being rescued by Breal Capital and Calverton.

In November, the brand was purchased by Sugarloaf, led by former TGI Fridays CEO Ray Blanchette, but that takeover may well be shortlived. In late November, The Caterer reported that the business had already been put up for sale.
