However, one employee at the New Lanark World Heritage Site has gone one stage further and brought together what it was like for New Lanark soldiers on the frontline and those back home who were helping the war effort in the Mills.

Ruth Beattie was given the painstaking task of researching the men from the village who went to war and their families who were left behind.

However, New Lanark couldn’t have picked a better person for the job – as Ruth has a degree in military history,

She said: “It’s been a lot of hard work and there is still a lot of work to do.

“We are hoping that we will get some help from the public if they have any papers or mementos from their grandfathers or great-grandfathers who were involved in World War One.”

Ruth has obtained enlistment papers for 90 men.

Of those 90 men, 29 are commemorated on the village’s war memorial having been killed during the war.

However, Ruth has also managed to obtain papers for other men who were connected with the village.
