Hummingbird hawk moth spotted in Brocketsbrae

A GAZETTE reader from Brocketsbrae phoned in to say he had seen a hummingbird hawk moth. This is one of the few moths that is about in daytime.

The moth has a long proboscis which allows it to take nectar from flowers whilst hovering in front of them. It resembles a hummingbird. The slightly warmer damp weather is ideal for moths and butterflies.

Readers might like to participate in the butterfly count which is taking place. Tortoiseshell, red admiral and green veined white have been seen in the past few days. To find out more call 01555 665262 or email [email protected].
