Lanark Grammar art is expressive success

IT might have been going for over 800 years but it is doubtful if at any time in its long, long history Lanark Grammar School has been able to boast so many creative young students.

Even a generation ago, the Grammar’s creative side was pretty much confined to the traditional arts classes and the odd school musical concert,

Today the school seems to be bursting at the seams with all forms of artistic expression.

In recent years highly popular Young Musician of the Year awards were held but, with the school now teaching a triple programme of music, art and drama, it was decided to introduce a new awards night to reward excellence in all three fields.

So the Expressive Arts Awards Evening was born this year and, sponsored by Lanark Rotary Club, saw a packed audience of parents lap up the many and varied talents being showcased by the winners and other competitors.

The prizelist included the Junior Musician of the Year Ward going to flautist Hannah Aitken and the Junior Singer was Emily Booth. The Senior Musician was drummer Douglas Scott and the Senior Singer Shereen Cutkelvin.

The Young Actor award went to Liam Wilson and the Young Artist Awards went to: S1-Amy Urquhart, S2-Emma McNamara and S3- Jenny Callan.

All aspects of these and other talents at the school delighted the audience.

A spokeswoman for the school said that the evening was judged a fantastic success and, thanks to the support of all, including those vital Rotary sponsors, it was expected that this would now become an annual event.

All who attended the evening came away knowing that, so far as being given a chance to express themselves, the youngsters at Lanark Grammar are far from being held back!
