Making the most of the sister act

Smash-hit musical comedy Sister Act is currently on tour throughout the UK and Ireland, coming to Glasgow for a limited time only.

The musical — inspired by the 1992 film of the same name — will play at the city’s King’s Theatre from the 11th-22nd of this month, and with production by the star of the original movie, Whoopi Goldberg, behind it, the show looks set for a successful run.

Denise Black, better known as her Coronation Street namesake Denise Osbourne, stars as the stern Mother Superior whilst Michael Starke of Brookside fame takes on the male lead, Monsignor O’Hara.

The lead role of nun on the run Deloris Van Cartier is confidently taken up by rising star Cynthia Erivo in what is her biggest role yet.

Detailing the story of a woman put in a convent as part of the police’s protective custody scheme after she witnesses a murder, Sister Act is a larger-than-life romp with great gags and terrific music.

When Deloris then takes an interest in the convent’s choir and breathes new life into the local, run-down neighbourhood, she risks blowing her cover for good.

The accompanying score by eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken has received universal praise since the show opened in late 2006, and is today considered one of the draws of the production.

Sister Act, at the Kings Theatre, September 11-22, tickets priced £18.50-£43.50, available on Box Office 0844 871 7648.
