No Mean City for music

LAMENTING the end of festival season? Packing away the tent as autumn fast approaches?

Fear not – this week, Glasgow’s own No Mean City festival returns, bringing with it a host of gigs spread across city venues.

Celebrating all things Americana, the three-week festival acknowledges Glasgow’s musical links across the pond.

The music kicks off next Thursday (August 30) with Willis Earl Beal at the Art School and Grandaddy headlining the 02 ABC.

The latter – an indie rock group hailing from somewhat sunnier California – have some instantly recognisable tunes, including the now ever-sampled AM 180 (some might recognise it from films, others from the credits of Charlie Brooker’s Screenwipe).

September 5 sees the godmother of punk Patti Smith (and her band) take to the same stage, as do Billy Bragg and KT Tunstall on September 14 – the second a special collaboration celebrating Woody G uthrie’s centenary.

No Mean City finishes on September 19 with one of its own, as Karine Polwart – Scottish singer-songwriter currently appearing in The Burns Unit – takes to the Oran Mor stage.
