Phoenix Choir will light up Lanark

The concert is being organised jointly by St Nicholas Parish Church, as part of its 240th anniversary celebrations and The Rotary Club of Lanark, with the Rotary theme for 2014-2015 Light Up Rotary.

The Phoenix was founded in 1951, arising from the ashes of the Glasgow Orpheus Choir which disbanded after 50 years. It has continued that choral tradition, with performances throughout Europe and North America.

The choir has an extensive and varied repertoire, which includes sacred, classical, opera, West End and Broadway shows, modern hits and, of course, Scottish songs.

David Strachan, a past president of Lanark Rotary and an elder of St Nicholas Church, is one of a number of Lanarkshire members of the Phoenix Choir.

“One of the things that attracted me to it was just the variety of music it performed,” he said.

The choir has also recorded a number of CDs and also featured in a recent Christmas Special of the TV comedy Still Game.
