Pop princess Katie uses pupil power to hit the high notes

Katie Sutherland, who under her former stage name Pearl and the Puppets, supported Elton John in concert, has been recording ‘Canvas’ in London over recent weeks.

But when the Kirkintilloch musician needed a choir to feature on her record she came home to sign up singers from two local schools.

Pupils from Katie’s old school St Ninian’s High teamed up with children from St Flannan’s Primary at Chem 19 recording studio in Hamilton.

They joined Katie, her band and Coldplay producer Danton Supple to deliver their contribution to the record – due out later this year.

A delighted Katie said: “A big thank-you to St Ninian’s High and St Flannan’s Primary School for singing on my record.

“I used to study primary teaching and my favourite lesson for the little ones was always music.

“It wasn’t just about singing songs, it was making children realise that they could learn concepts, dynamics and genres in music that we listen to every day – pop, rock and indie, as well as classical.”

She added: “It was a lot of fun involving the pupils. I hope I’ve given them a music lesson that they will never forget.

“I needed some young vocals on the record and thought why not use students from my old school and hometown? It’s an exciting time!”

Katie will be playing live at Glasgow’s Maggie Mays venue on Sunday, July 29, and Perth Racecourse on Tuesday, July 31.
