Roller derby to raise money for charity

Roller derby skaters from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Falkirk and Livingston will take part in a special bout on Saturday, December 7, to raise awareness of the 16 Days of Action for the Elimination of Violence Against Women campaign.

All proceeds from the bout will go toward the Women’s Support Project, a Glasgow-based feminist voluntary organisation which works to raise awareness of the extent, causes and effect of male violence against women.

The ‘Hell Hath No Fury’ charity bout takes place at Glasgow ARC sports centre and will feature amazing skaters from Glasgow Roller Derby (GRD), Fierce Valley, Dundee, New Town, Lothian Derby Dolls, Bairn City Rollers and Auld Reekie Roller Girls.

The event has been organised by skater Trucks Norris aka - Hannah Brown - who previously worked for Women’s Support Project and is also a member of GRD’s Maiden Grrders team.

Hannah, said: “This is your chance to support a fantastic campaign, raise money for an extremely important cause and enjoy the thrills and spills of some amazing roller derby up close.

“If you’ve never been to a roller derby bout before then this is the perfect way to get to know this exciting sport in a relaxed, fun and inclusive atmosphere.

“Roller derby has been pioneered by women across the world and promotes a wealth of positive values. It genuinely is a sport without barriers and plays a key role in raising female self-esteem and promoting physical well-being across the world - regardless of age, body shape and starting fitness level.

“Feminism and roller derby are both passions for many of us, so this is the perfect way to raise awareness for 16 Days of Action. I hope you come along and see some amazing skaters in action.

“Many of the country’s roller derby leagues are about to take a break for their ‘off season’ so this is a great way to mark the end of what has been a monumental year for all Scottish leagues.”

The 16 Days of Action for the Elimination of Violence Against Women campaign is a global phenomenon which runs from November 25 to December 10.

The Women’s Support Project is a feminist voluntary organisation which works to raise awareness of the extent, causes and effect of male violence against women.

It also works to provide improved services to those affected by violence, and highlights the links between different forms of male violence and promoting inter-agency responses to the abuse of women and children.
