St Kentigern walking route could boost local tourism

That’s because folk might soon be following in the footsteps of the man who links the City of Glasgow with the Royal Burgh of Lanark - St Kentigern.

An idea is being considered to form a new historical walking route, going all the way from Glasgow Cathedral to Lanark’s Old St Kentigerns Chapel, via another historic auld Scots kirk, that of Dalserf.

Because of Kentigern’s links with these locations, the Lanark Archaeological Society and others are eyeing the creation of a Way of the Saints Route as a clever idea for enticing more tourists out of Glasgow to bring themselves - and their wallets and purses - here to Clydesdale.

For a long time, this area’s tourist trade has complained that too much of the promotion effort of the official tourist body, VisitScotland, has gone into attracting visitors to our two largest cities, Clydesdale getting, allegedly, a raw deal.

Naturally, VisitScotland has denied this bias, claiming it does encourage visitors to the cities to make at least a day trip foray here. Now local groups such as the Society are laying plans to ‘steal’ some of Glasgow’s tourists from it.
