Here is the story behind some of the city’s well known landmarks and places

There are a number of neighbourhoods or landmarks in Glasgow that you may have visited or passed by and wondered to yourself exactly what they are named after.

Many places in the city derive from Scottish Gaelic while others have an alternative tale to tell.

Here are some of the places and sites in the city which have a particular back story to them.

The small neighbourhood is bizarrely named after the famous 19th century Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind. She is said to have stayed at an inn in the area which was the first place in Glasgow to pay homage to the ‘Swedish Nightingale’.

With Byres Road at it centre, Hillhead is found in the heart of Glasgow’s West End. The area is said to be named after a property that stood at the top of a steep hill above the River Kelvin called Hillhead House.
