Theatre giant's play comes to Giffnock

For almost 70 years Giffnock Theatre Players has been a major player in amateur dramatic circles.

For most of that time the club has presented three productions each season, and for 45 of those years, have staged them in Eastwood Theatre.

The range of productions is staggering – comedies, whodunnits, period dramas – and past productions include Calendar Girls, The Steamie, Whisky Galore and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

And the club recently trod new ground – or should that be boards – by staging Shakespeare, covering both tragedy (Macbeth) and comedy (Twelfth Night).

Now the club is preparing to stage a major piece of American drama – Edward Albee’s A Delicate Balance.

Albee, who died last year, is perhaps best known for Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf, filmed in the 60s with Burton and Taylor as a warring couple. A Delicate Balance may be less well-known but many reckon it is his best play.

Katherine Hepburn, Paul Scofield, Glenn Close and John Lithgow have all had the play included on their CVs, and now GTP brings the play to Eastwood Theatre from Wednesday, April 26, to Saturday, April 29. Evening performances begin at 7.30pm and the Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.

Although the club has always attracted new young members this production happens to entirely feature a cast of well-known and established GTP players, and audiences are guaranteed a polished performance. GTP may be an amateur club but their professional approach to every aspect of production – acting, costume, set design, sound and lighting – is a constant hallmark of their contribution to southside drama. A Delicate Balance is an experience not to be missed.

Glynis Poole, club chairman, told the Extra: “The club has enjoyed tremendous support from southside theatregoers over very many years. We never take that support for granted and when the curtain goes up this month our audiences, once again, are in for a great night’s theatre from a theatrical giant in the form of Edward Albee.”

Tickets are £15 (£13 concessions available), with an offer of all tickets at £10 on Wednesday and 2 tickets for £20 for the Saturday performances and may be purchased by phoning 07518 201756 or 0141 577 4956, or by emailing [email protected] or online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/giffnock-theatre-players or www.eastwoodparktheatre.co.uk.
