William Wallace returns to Lanark!

SCOTLAND’S hero came back to Lanark to mark the anniversary of his first strike against the English - and to find out how much Scots know about his life.

The Edinburgh Dungeon sent William Wallace to five towns and cities to check whether today’s Scots remembered his links to their communities and his role in The Wars of Independence, following his killing of the English Sheriff Hesselrigg of Lanark in 1297.

Wallace had heard that he is not honoured in the towns and cities he fought for, and that his story has not been properly taught in schools, but blotted out by Mel Gibson’s Braveheart.

The Dungeon’s General Manager, Johnny Campbell, said: “Our William Wallace asked some serious questions of people in Lanark, Glasgow, Dundee, Stirling and Edinburgh.

“It’s often claimed that Scottish history has been neglected in our schools for many years and that modern Scots have lost touch with their past.

“So William Wallace put them to the test. Their wits were doubtless sharpened by his long sword and short temper.”
