It will be on display for the next six weeks.

The arrival of what is said to be the longest tapestry in the world is a major coup for the village in its current major effort to increase visitor numbers.

The Great Tapestry has proved a major magnet for visitors at the other locations it has toured.

The work tells, in thousands of miles of thread, the history of Scotland, from its very geological formation through major events in the nation’s past to modern times.

It was lovingly created by hundreds of volunteers from around Scotland and is said to represent Scotland’s largest ever community project.

And it includes a panel showing the history of the New Lanark, worked by volunteers in the village.

Said a spokeswoman for the New Lanark Trust: “So far this year the tapestry has been visited by more than 100,000 people as it has toured Scotland and thousands more are expected at New Lanark.
