106 Devine family relatives resurrect Ayr Day

AN astonishing 106 relatives of Carluke's Devine family took two buses to Ayr for a family day out, which certainly had interesting repercussions when it came to ordering fish suppers for everyone!

Vincent Mooney, organiser of the Devine gathering on June 19, was astonished that so many people turned up for an outing which set off from St Athanasius Church Hall.

"It was an absolutely fantastic day," said Vincent (39), of Orion Way.

"After getting to Ayr we had a massive family game of rounders on the large grassy area near the seafront, and a tug of war session with 50 people.

"We were lucky that the weather was perfect.

"The kids also loved having a go at obstacle courses we set up, before the top performers were given medals and prizes.

"When it came to getting dinner later on, it certainly took a while for us to get over 100 fish suppers from the chippy!

"The shop assistants' eyes lit up when they saw us.

"I think it must have been record takings for the shop."

The Gathering resurrected the Devine family's famous "Ayr Day" in the 1960's.
