East Dunbartonshire Council has been working flat out in recent years in an attempt to meet tough Scottish Government recycling targets.

Since January, hundreds of bins have been rolling out to residents in flats throughout the area and it’s hoped that half of flatted developments will have this service by the end of the year.

The new bins being delivered will allow residents to recycle paper, card, cans, plastic bottles and glass. This avoids this material being sent to landfill, so is more cost effective and environmentally friendly.

Councillor Ashay Ghai, convenor of neighbourhood services, said: “East Dunbartonshire has an outstanding recycling record but until now there have been some barriers in our way to extending this service to flats.

“Thanks to some funding from Zero Waste Scotland, we have been able to find ways round these issues and are now forging ahead.

Recycling has really become second nature. Ten years ago most of us were struggling with the idea, but it’s become much easier and we enjoy doing our bit. I am glad we are now able to extend this service to residents in flats.”
