A flipping good time for charity

A POLLOKSHIELDS man is continuing to up the ante in his bid to raise funds for charity through feats of physical fitness.

Andy McAllister teamed up with 10 like-minded souls on Friday to flip three 100kg tyres for more than one mile.

The group of fitness fanatics transported their tyres between two gyms in Glasgow’s westend.

The group started at Nuffield Health and Fitness in Finnieston and culminated their journey at Evolution Fitness in Yorkhill.

The flash fundraiser raised almost £1,000 in under a week.

It’s the first of many events this year for Andy, who is raising funds in his mother’s honour.

Andy’s mum Sally died in 2011 after a brave struggle with bowel cancer.

Inspired by his mum’s fight, he began the Sally Challenge, an endurance event which includes a 10 mile run and a 13 mile cycle.

The fundraisers, and the main event of August’s duathlon, will raise funds for The Accord Hospice.

Andy, who runs Park Circuits, a Glasgow based fitness group, told The Extra: “These events are about putting other people first, just like my mum did.

“Raising that amount of money in such a short space of time is an amazing result from such a simple idea.

“I want to thank everyone that has donated so far and all the incredible people that made the event actually happen.”

Ken Mathie, fundraising manager for The Accord Hospice, added: “Andy has been a wonderful supporter of the work of ACCORD in respect of his mother, who was looked after by our specialist palliative care team.

“Each year the Sally Challenge raises thousands of pounds for ACCORD.

“The fundraising effort for this year’s event has got off to a great start through this flash fundraising event.

“My thanks go to the slightly mad people who took part!”
