The free event will include wartime food sampling, some tunes from 1914 with five-piece band Gladstone’s Bag, and tales from behind a collection of military uniforms.

It’s part of a series of events to mark the First World War centenary and takes place in William Patrick Library, in Kirkintilloch, from 11am to 2pm on Saturday, February 14.

Councillor Alan Moir said:“The event will be full of fascinating stories of men and women from East Dunbartonshire who were involved in the First World War at home and on the battlefront and the activities on offer will help give people a real understanding of what life was like for them.”

The Scottish Military Research Group will be there to help people learn more about their wartime memorabilia such as medals, postcards and photographs.

Children will also be able to experience what life was like during the war with traditional games and will have the chance to dress up in wartime clothes.

The Walking Theatre Company’s field kitchen will serve up examples of trench food such as bully beef and sandbag mess alongside the rationed food of the home front.

Scott Hill, Chair of EDLC Trust, said: “The event is part of the Untold Stories of the First World War project, in which EDLC Trust employees are gathering stories of local residents who served in the armed forces or did their bit on the home front.

“The special project is aimed at researching and recording untold stories of heroism, sacrifice and duty from the First World War which will then feature in a travelling exhibition and in events in libraries throughout the four years of commemoration events, with the possibility of a film and even a book.”

Free refreshments will be provided. For more information contact EDLC on 0300 123 4510
