A history of East Dunbartonshire in 110 objects

Over 70 people attended the opening of a fascinating exhibition at the Auld Kirk Museum which looks at the rich and colourful past of East Dunbartonshire through an eclectic selection of objects spanning the years.

‘Trails and Tales: A History of East Dunbartonshire in 110 Objects’ is the culmination of a two year programme run by the East Dunbartonshire Leisure & Culture Trust to involve local people in chronicling life in the area’s towns and villages through the ages.

The free exhibition features a curated time line of objects from the Trust’s Museum and Archive Collections, from a Neolithic carved stone ball to a rather more modern Garvie’s Lemonade water jug.

And as well as objects from the collection, the exhibition features photographs of people and artists who took part in the popular ‘Trails and Tales programme’.

The exhibition, which runs until 16 July, was opened by EDLC Trust board member Councillor Stewart MacDonald.

He said: “The Trails and Tales programme has been an ambitious project which caught the imagination of more than 14 communities at dozens of events and workshop activities over the past two years.

“These well attended events brought local people together in halls and libraries in every corner of the area to record their memories of East Dunbartonshire and what we have as a result is a truly interesting and

inspiring exhibition.

“There’s still some time to see the exhibition and I’d urge anyone with a love of local history to go to the Auld Kirk museum and soak up everything it has to offer.”

Trails and Tales will be presenting the findings gathered through the project over the summer months to the public through another series of events.

There will also be access to the full online time line of objects and an opportunity for visitors to contribute their own ideas and objects to a community time line of local archives and treasures.

Local people will be invited to decide the detail of 11 outdoor trails which will be installed across the area as focal points to ensure the lasting legacy of the project.
