A number of events are planned in Biggar to raise £2 million for Biggar Museum Trust’s ambitious plans

A wide range of events is being organised to raise funds for Biggar Museum Trust’s ambitious £2 million plans for a new museum in the town.

As reported previously, the Trust has an option to buy Stephens Garage at the top of the High Street, then refurbish and refit it to replace the ageing Moat Park and Gladstone Court museums.

But the Trust has only until the end of July to raise the initial £385,000 before its option to buy the derelict garage expires.

At a public meeting in Biggar, Trust chairman James Dawnay explained that the existing two museums were no longer fit for purpose, and encouraged everyone to make donations to the Stephens Garage appeal and to organise fundraising events.

“We have had a very good reaction,” he said this week.

“A lot of people have put in offers to help, and quite a few people are writing cheques and sending in donations.

“A lot of people have come up with ideas for fundraising. It is a very encouraging response.”

Events already in the pipeline include a mediaeval festival.
