A right royal success for rafting quartet

A group of Milngavie Girlguides recently received royal approval for their raft building skills in a special anniversary competition.

Four members of Milngavie Senior Section were among young people from across Scotland who met at Lochgoilhead, the Scouts Scotland National Activity Centre, as part of a tour to celebrate 60 years of the Duke of Edinburgh Award (DoE).

The Earl of Wessex was on hand to launch a special Diamond Challenge raft race.

The Milngavie Senior Section demonstrated their teamwork and communication skills while building their raft and paddling to the finish line.

The royal guest presented the group with the top prize and spoke to them about the wide range of opportunities Girlguiding Scotland offers girls and young women.

Rebecca (16) said: “It was great to be able to show our teamwork and communication skills during the raft–building challenge and we were so proud to have won the race.

“After The Earl of Wessex presented us with our prize we had the chance to talk to him about what our Senior Section Division gets up to and the opportunities Girlguiding Scotland has offered us to try new experiences, gain new skills and use our voice.”

Ashley (15) added: “I was pretty nervous before the raft race but we worked really well as a team and were so proud of our achievement. It was an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and something I will remember for a long time.”

The event is one of a number taking place across the UK, giving youngsters the chance to earn a limited-edition Diamond Challenge pin.

For young people aged 14-24, undertaking a DofE Award offers a unique opportunity to grow as young adults, gaining valuable life experience while developing essential employability skills.

This year, more than 20,000 young people across Scotland started their DofE Award, the highest ever intake across a 12-month period for the region.

As a Trustee and a Gold Award holder, HRH The Earl of Wessex has championed the DofE for many years.
