A sporting chance at Eastwood High

The plan for the new school and sports centre.

The Eastwood High building is due to open this month and houses all-new state-of-the-art facilities which will be open for the entire community.

It is set to replace the old Eastwood High School Games Hall and, with the rebuilding of the school, comes with a combined cost of £28.9 million.

The sports centre will be opening on Monday, June 24 and will feature two four-court sports halls with enough floor space for indoor hockey; a swimming pool; a fitness/dance studio; a synthetic football pitch; a synthetic athletics track; a synthetic hockey pitch and a small games hall.

The new school and sport hall, which is on the site of the old high school on Capelrig Road, opens for pupils this August.

The new sports facility will be the base the Eastwood Community Sports Hub — which is the combination of different sports clubs, working together to improve and enhance sport within the area.

For the council, it brings the opportunity to develop programmes across the generations: children, young people, adults and older people.

Also included in the plans are a full health and fitness programme, club development, coach and volunteers development and events and festivals.

To kick-start the centre’s events programme, there will be a Commonwealth Games sports and dance showcase on August 24 and 25 which will see the council encou5raging P4 to S2-age children try taster sessions in a range of different activities provided by local sports clubs.

Convener for community services and community safety, councilor Mary Montague said: “Spots facilities in East Renfrewshire are second to none and the new Eastwood High Sports Centre will be a fantastic addition to our provision.

“Along with the new school, this represents a huge investment by the council and it will be a real asset for everyone in the area to enjoy.

“By improving facilities, we aim to increase participation in and widen access to sport and physical activity for the whole community and create a lasting legacy for sport within East Renfrewshire.”
