A spot of lunch at the Eastwood Allotments

GREEN-fingered residents rejoiced as the sun reared its head for the first official open day at the Eastwood Nursery Allotments.

The community initiative held a Big Lunch at the weekend to celebrate its achievements to date, and it was a time to share, as a picnic theme ensured that everyone made a food contribution — including restaurant The New Turban.

Stephen Naysmith, chair of the Eastwood Nursery Allotments Association, told The Extra: “With a wide variety of traditional and less traditional crops already beginning to sprout, it was great to welcome existing members and residents interested in finding out more, to see how much progress has already been made.

“By the time we hold our next event, in September, plot-holders will be able to show off the first harvest, but for now I’m delighted that so many turned out in support — and we couldn’t have asked for better weather.”

Councillor Vincent Waters, East Renfrewshire council’s environment convener, added: “The Big Lunch is a great way to get communities together. The association were marvelous hosts and everyone had fun socialising and sharing. Having lunch in the allotments garden gave locals the chance to see the development of this once forgotten part of Eastwood Park.”
