Abington soldier Christopher Leyden mentioned in Dispatches

A MAN who swapped the tranquil Upperward hills for the deadly ones of Afghanistan has proved himself among the British Army’s bravest of the brave.

There is colossal pride in the Abington area this week at the news that one of its sons, 28-year-old Lance Sergeant Christopher Leyden, has been mentioned in Despatches for showing “great courage” during a vicious shooting match with terrorists.

Obviously not the sort given to over-dramatising things, the Scots Guardsman summed up the incident as being “like one of those cowboy films”.

To find out more about a very modest hero, pick up a copy of this week’s Carluke and Lanark Gazette which is in the shops now.
