Janette Rankin from Pollokshaws, signed up for the daring stunt, which involves a white-knuckle 40mph 150ft drop across the river, after hearing about it during a talk on the work of Cancer Support Scotland.

Janette said: “I was so impressed at the number of cancer patients, their families and friends that Cancer Support Scotland helps with their free counselling and complementary therapies that I decided I wanted to raise money for them.

“The zip slide appealed to me because it is a tremendous adventure and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Janette’s daughter Carol and son Graeme are not surprised their mum wants to do the Zip slide.

They said: “She has always been adventurous, has tremendous grit and determination. Go for it mum and enjoy it!”

Her friends are all very supportive and not surprised at her daredevil attitude.

The event, which takes place this Sunday (April 8), involves zipsliding from a tower adjacent to the Finnieston Crane on the north side of the river to the landing site on the south side.

Gwen Stewart, Cancer Support Scotland community fund-raiser, said: “Janette is a remarkable lady and it’s just fantastic that she’s taking on this challenge.

“All the counselling and complementary services we provide are free and demand for them grows all the time so we need more people like Janette to fund raise for us so we can help people cope at this traumatic time in their lives.”
