Advice over bonfire safety

With advice on bonfire safety, alcohol and fire and the law, the official brigade site at www.firescotlandg.gov.uk is packed full of information.

This year’s campaign is being fronted by Ben McCabe, who suffered horrific burns in a fireworks accident in 2011 when he was just four years old.

A spokesperson said that organised events were the safest, with information on your local council website, but issued tips if you are planning your own event.

If you are planning on organising your own event fire officers warn not to go near fireworks or bonfires while under the influence of drink, and if you are lighting a bonfire at home make sure it is well away from buildings, vehicles, trees, hedges, fences, power lines, telecommunications equipment and sheds - and you must ensure that smoke does not cause a nuisance to neighbours or flying embers endanger neighbouring property.

Don’t use any flammable liquird and do not put pressurised or sealed containers onto a bonfire.
