Another late licence bid for Shawlands club

Owner Michele Pagliocca was turned down for a late licence for Friday and Saturday nights in October last year, despite support from some customers and neighbouring businesses.

Now, the club is appealing to supporters to share their views with Glasgow City Council’s licensing board before a deadline of December 29.

A spokeswoman for The Shed said: “In the west end, Oran Mor has been allowed a 3am licence and we believe Shawlands should be afforded similar consideration.

“This extra hour offered elsewhere has had a direct impact on Shawlands’ night time economy, which sadly has seen a number of premises close over the years.

“We have carried out two surveys — over 70 per cent of those asked said they would visit the venue more often if its licence was extended to 3am, and out of those respondents, over 90% would opt to stay in the southside if the venue was granted a 3am licence.”

The club argues that events ending at 3am allow for staggered exits, rather than all clubbers leaving at 2am.

The campaign for later opening has “strong support” from Brian McMahon, chair of Shawlands Business Association, who added: “Its venue, culturally and socially, continues to play an extremely important role in the southside community.

“In terms of future developments, we are currently working in partnership with the council and Shawlands and Strathbungo Community Council on the redevelopment of Shawlands’ main square.

“Our aim is to create a vibrant cultural quarter and The Shed will be vital to the development and promotion of the area.”
