Anti-rape campaign prompts increased CCTV coverage

Community Safety Glasgow (CSG) has revealed plans for cameras on Govanhill main streets Victoria Road, Allison Street and Calder Street, as well as the more residential areas of Dixon Avenue, Annette Street, Garturk Street and Westmoreland Street.

The move follows a spate of sexual assaults in the area earlier this year, and a resulting anti-rape march held at Queen’s Park in June and attended by thousands of campaigners showing support for victims.

A spokeswoman for Glasgow City Council said: “Govanhill, like the rest of the city, is set to benefit from the installation of new high definition CCTV cameras as part fo the £24 million Future City Glasgow programme.

“CCTV cameras have proven to provide increased public reassurance and act as a deterrent to antisocial behaviour.”

Southside central councillor Soryia Siddique met with CSG and residents over the issue, as well as writing to Police Scotland chief, sir Stephen House.

She welcomes increased CCTV provision for Govanhill in particular, and told The Extra: “This is a step towards building confidence in the area and a welcome financial commitment that will be part of the improvements proposed for Govanhill over the next few years.

“It is paramount that people feel safe and have a feeling of pride in their community.”
