Applications open for Children’s Panel role

Applications are now invited as the Children’s Hearing System searches for an area convener to lead 25 panel members.

A spokeswoman for East Renfrewshire Council explained: “The Children’s Hearing System is Scotland’s care and justice system for children and young people in need of care, protection and support.

“Children’s panel members play a vital role, generously giving their time, skills and commitment to make decisions based on sound reasons in the best interests of each child or young person, aimed at improving his or her life.”

Area Support Teams (ASTs) are responsible for panel member recruitment, selection, induction and practice observation, as well as managing a rota and supporting members.

The spokeswoman added: “The area convener’s responsibilities include leading and directing the AST and ensuring they fulfil their responsibilities.

“Positions are voluntary, with reasonable travel and out-of-pocket expenses reimbursed, and volunteers are asked to commit to the equivalent of between two and six hours per week.

“Applicants should be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to, and understanding of the ethos, values and principles of the Children’s Hearings System as well as an understanding of the role of panel members.”
