Army brings recruitment drive to Strathclyde Park

Servicemen and women will be on hand to offer advice and help people apply for a range of reserve jobs in the British Army.

The event is being held to support the British Army’s new recruitment campaign - A Better You, which represents a departure from traditional Army recruitment, using the strapline: ‘Don’t join the Army. Don’t become a better you’.

The campaign is focused on grabbing the attention of today’s young people as the Army seeks to broaden consideration of the force as a career to a wider group of Generation Z.

The event runs from 10am-8pm and will give visitors the chance to test their agility with a BATTAK fast reactions wall and challenge themselves on a climbing wall, to see if they are fit enough for the Army.

Nine different Regular Army units/corps are attending, showcasing equipment they work with, including Scottish and North Irish Yeomanry.

The Royal Logistics Corp will be showing their SV MANN Truck and the Royal Artillery will be displaying their Light Gun.

Other equipment on display will be Foxhound from 1 SCOTs and a Jackal from Scots Guards.

There will also be seven different Army Reserve units/corps involved in the event, including 105 Regt Royal Artillery, 6th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, 71 Engineer Regiment and 32 Signals Regiment.

Kevin Thomson, careers advisor at the Army Careers Centre in Glasgow, said: “We want to challenge visitors to consider how they can become better versions of themselves through a career in the Army, be that in the Regular Army or in the Army Reserves.

“Local people will have the opportunity to meet the soldiers and ask any questions they may have about Army life, and about the roles the soldiers carry out.

“Various types of Army equipment will be on display and interactive challenges for visitors to take part in.”

Pte Stephen Clark, Rifleman in 1st Battalion the Royal Regiment of Scotland, will be attending the event.

He said: “My four years in the Army have been an exciting experience.

“I have been able to travel, develop life skills and make my family proud by doing something I love. I have gained my driving license through the Army and been on training in Bosnia and Kenya.

“I would recommend a career in the Army to anyone who is looking to gain valuable life skills in a secure job that allows you to make lifelong friends and develop every day.”
