Arrest after toddler found wandering alone in Motherwell street

A man has been arrested after a toddler was allegedly found wandering in a Motherwell street at night.

Police were called to reports that a two-year-old child was unaccompanied on Albion Street around 8.40pm on Sunday.

The tot was taken into the care of officers, and enquiries later led to a 49-year-old man being arrested and charged.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “About 8.40pm on Sunday, May 29, police attended the report of a young child wandering the streets in Albion Street, Motherwell.

“On their arrival they came across a two-year-old child who was not in the company of a suitable adult.

“The child was immediately taken into the care of police who liaised with the emergency social work department.

“Subsequent enquiries were carried out and a local 49-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with an alleged offence contrary to the Children and Young Persons Act 2014.

“A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”

The man is expected to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.
