Arrests as police crack down on underage drinking

They warn teenagers who use false identity documents to purchase alcohol, or people over 18 who buy booze for underage drinkers, will be charged.

The warning comes after a 17-year-old boy was arrested for allegedly trying to buy alcohol with a false ID.

A police spokesman at Kirkintilloch said: “Young people don’t realise this is a contravention of the Identity Documents Act 2010 and Licensing Scotland Act 2005.

“Teenagers think the ID will just be taken from them and that will be it. But they will be charged if they are caught.”

In a second incident, an 18-year-old boy was arrested and charged for purchasing alcohol for an underage teenager in Bishopbriggs.

A number of teenage youths were also charged for allegedly drinking in public in areas of Kirkintilloch, Lenzie and Lennoxtown.

Police said the incidents they had been called out to coincided with senior school pupils finishing for study leave.

All three incidents are alleged to have occurred on Friday, April 24 and Saturday, April 25.
