Artist pays tribute to the Glasgow spirit

The exhibition pays homage to the working men and women of Glasgow and the region’s industrial heritage, and will be on display from Friday, September 26.

To announce the exhibition, publisher Washington Green and the museum brought to life Alex’s ‘auld man’ and ‘auld woman’ characters, who feature throughout his art.

In a singing-in-the-rain style tribute to the stalwart optimism of Glasgow’s working men and women, the exhibition features paintings entitled: ‘The Sun Is In My Heart’ and ‘Here Comes The Sun’.

Millar has been a professional artist with Washington Green Fine Art since September 2003.

Themes of childhood and his own experience are prominent throughout his work and the traditional working man is the basis for Millar’s iconic ‘auld man’ character that is seen in his work.

Millar, said: “I’m proud of my Scottish roots and with this collection I wanted to celebrate my heritage, and my return to Glasgow. Many of the paintings and drawings in this collection, I’ve created from my memories of growing up, which includes my family — my dad, my nana and papa.

“I believe this collection will appeal to all generations; the works trigger memories for people who remember the industrial era, while children will see colour added to images that resemble that past, which they may have only previously seen in their grandparents’ old black and white photographs.”
