Artists sell top works for charity appeal

The free exhibition at The Glasgow Art Club in Bath Street, will have original artwork for sale and all money raised will go to Marie Curie - the charity for people living with a terminal illness.

East Dunbartonshire resident Cecilia Cardiff started painting full-time five years ago when she gave up her 25 year career in graphic design to spend time with her terminally ill mum, Helena Bruce. Helena had Motor Neuron Disease (MND) and sadly died in 2012, aged 72. Cecilia’s oil painting ‘Hameldaeme’ is the feature image for the event.

Cecilia said: “The heartache of watching my feisty, funny, determined and very loving human dynamo of a mum rapidly being ‘rubbed out’ was huge. It’s bittersweet for me; had mum not become ill, it’s probable I wouldn’t have found the emotional escapism that painting brought me, and led me to this wonderful, fulfilling path. Knowing that Marie Curie supports people with all terminal illnesses, not just cancer, and will be supporting people with the condition my mum had, makes it really poignant for me to be involved.”

Sponsored by Tilney and Hampden & Co, and supported by Makar Gin, Art for Care is open to the public from 11am – 5.30pm between Friday 26 August – Thursday 1 September, and 11am – 1:30pm on Friday 2 September (closed on Sunday 28 August).

Committee member May Storrie CBE said: “The committee are delighted to report that over the last two years Art for Care has raised £64,000 enabling us to provide 3,200 hours of nursing care. This supports people living in Glasgow and the surrounding area, both in the Marie Curie Hospice, Glasgow and through Marie Curie Nurses caring for people in their own homes. We could not have achieved this without the great support which we receive from our sponsors, artists and the general public who visit the event and purchase works of art.”
