Arts in Clarkston

THE town centre in Clarkston will become an outdoor art gallery from Saturday.

The exhibition (which runs until June 6) launches with an open-air fair Art in the windows at the farmers' market.

Artwork on show has been created by local primary schools including Carolside, Isobel Mair, Netherlee and St Joseph's.

Pupils from Williamwood and St Ninian's high schools will also be showcasing work.

And four local art groups will also be contributing.

Visitors to Clarkston will be able to view these artworks and vote on their favourite pieces.

The project, just one of many planned for the area — has been set up by BID — an acronym for the local business improvement district.

Its co-ordinator is Clarkston resident Gordon Brown (48) who told The Extra: "We hope shops will see the increased footfall first hand.

"It should also be the start of Clarkston finding a new identity and becoming more of a destination".

The art gallery concept kickstarts BID's aim to gain support from a majority of local businesses of which all 132 have already been balloted.

If they give the go ahead, and commit to raising 80,000 in the first year (a total of 300,000 over five years) it will fund more projects to enhance the town centre.

East Renfrewshire council promises support – and 20,000 – if a majority of local businesses supports the scheme.

All cash raised will go towards funding six annual events to bring in shoppers, create a marketing campaign and introduce a shop improvement fund.

Councillor Mary Montague, ERC's convener in charge of the arts, describes the art gallery aspect as "as a tremendous opportunity to showcase the talents of artists from local groups and schools.

"You'll get the chance to see art in unusual settings across Clarkston and do your bit to support the BID ballot that could bring long-term benefits to the area".

Mr Brown hopes the artistic opener will increase the area's profile and give businesses visual evidence of the benefits of voting yes to the BID.

Longer term, Christmas lighting will also be introduced and there will be a review of both parking and traffic flow.
