Auchengeich memorial service

A poignant service marking the 51st anniversary of the Auchengeich mining disaster will take place this Sunday, September 19.

Former miners, school children, politicians, church representatives and council officials will gather to pay tribute to the 47 men who died in one of the worst pit disasters the country has ever known.

Six miners from Condorrat and one from Kilsyth lost their lives on that tragic day 51 years ago.

Thousands of people flocked to Auchengeich last September for the 50th anniversary of the tragedy and the unveiling of a special bronze statue of a miner. Sadly, just a few months later, the statue was stolen.

However, in June this year, a new statue was unveiled at the Auchengeich site with special security measures installed to protect it.

The 51st memorial service will take place at the Auchengeich Miners' Memorial, Gartferry Road, Moodiesburn, at 1pm on Sunday, September 19.
