Indeed, a decision taken by South Lanarkshire Council last week could see the tiny and shrinking pupil roll at Auchengray Primary almost DOUBLE in the near future.

For a generation now the quaint but ageing school building has essentially been only a half school.

An increase in the rural population back in the 1970s meant that the building was too small to accommodate all the children living in its catchment area.

It was decided at the time that the village school would only educate local children up to P4 – the P5-7 children would be bussed to the much larger Carnwath Primary School to complete their education.

Since then times, and circumstances, have changed.
