Award for Eastwood’s charity champion

The S5 was nominated by the school after collecting more than £1,700 for tackling the 96-mile West Highland Way in honour of her mum, Kirsteen, who suffers from a rare lung disease.

Kirsteen told The Extra: “Briony had just turned 13 and camped out every night — she’s tiny and it took those poor wee legs 10 days. Even now we’re still in awe of this achievement.”

The money was split between the British Lung Foundation and Eastwood High, which used the funds to refurbish a room in the pupil support base.

And as if that wasn’t enough, Briony also went for the chop and donated her hair to the Little Princess Trust, which makes wigs for children who have suffered hair loss through illness .

The schoolgirl is now re-growing her long tresses so that she can donate them for a second time.

Eastwood High head teacher Stuart Maxwell said: “Briony has worked tirelessly to raise money for charity over a number of years.

“Her recognition as Eastwood’s first recipient of a Diana Award is a great achievement.”

The award is a national honour — in memory of the late Princess Diana — which celebrates the contributions made by young people to the community around them.
