Back to life for Shawlands pub

Edwardian pub The Corona has been taken over by The Butterfly and the Pig, with plans to restore the building -—and its iconic clock tower — to its former glory.

Owner Michele Paglioacca has been restoring the 1912 building’s original features as part of a £200,000 refurbishment programme — including a plaque explaining the significance of a carving above the door, linked to Mary Queen of Scots and the Battle of Langside.

Michele, who also owns The Shed next door, said: “It’s an exciting time for us and for Shawlands itself, which is enjoying a resurgence.

“The future is looking bright for the area, with plans for a civic square at Shawlands Cross, and we are delighted to be right in the thick of all the positive developments.”

The new addition has been welcomed by Shawlands Business Association and the Southside Fringe team, with plans to use it as a venue for this year’s festival.

Langside councillor Archie Graham, chair of the steering group responsible for the Shawlands Town Centre Action Plan, added: “The Butterfly and the Pig’s arrival to Shawlands is great news for the local economy.

“I expect it will play an important role in not only encouraging locals to stay in the area, but attracting visitors from further afield too , and I look forward to seeing the building returned to its original condition.”
