The charity was alerted on July 7 when a member of the public came across the animal in the Riccard Johnston woodland area of New Stevenston.

This comes three months after another badger was found dead at Ravenscraig having also been attacked by dogs.

A Scottish SPCA undercover inspector said: “The badger was uplifted by park rangers from Strathclyde Country Park and we then arranged for a post-mortem. The results came back conclusively that it was killed by dogs. “In April we investigated a similar incident after a badger which had also been attacked by dogs was found within the Ravenscraig site.

“This is only around four miles from where the latest badger was discovered and we are beginning to suspect that there is a distinct possibility someone is actually targeting these animals.

“The previous incident is still under investigation and we are working with local wildlife crime police and Scottish Badgers.

“We are still looking into names that were highlighted as a result of our last appeal for information and we are very keen to speak to anyone with information about individuals who have potentially been involved in either of these cases.

“Anyone with information can call our animal helpline on 03000 999 999 anonymously and all calls are treated in strict confidence.”
