Badgering South Lanarkshire Council for signs

AN ANIMAL welfare campaigner wants South Lanarkshire Council to erect road signs warning motorists about badgers, before any more of the animals are knocked down and killed.

Graham Hogg would like two signs put up on the A72 Clydeside road near Overtown, after what he believes to be a recent upsurge in the number of dead badger sightings in the area.

"I hope the council put up these signs," said Graham (50), a member of campaign group Scottish Badgers.

"It is very important they do because Lanarkshire is the area of Scotland with the highest number of badger deaths.

"I don't know if that's because there are more badgers here or it's just because drivers are simply not paying attention."

Graham, who does voluntary work for the Scottish Wildlife Trust at the Falls of Clyde Wildlife Reserve in New Lanark, has started an online petition promoting the erection of badger warning signs at www.scottishbadgers.org.uk

A spokesperson for South Lanarkshire Council roads department responded by saying: "It is presently not considered a priority to increase the usage of this type of signage as it has very limited impact, it increases sign clutter on the network and could have a substantial cost

implication."
