Banton left high and dry after water supply failure

RESIDENTS of Banton were left high and dry recently when they awoke on a Friday morning to find their water supply had failed overnight.

The issue arose because of a problem with a pipe under Mailings Road and was promptly reported to Scottish Water at approximately 7am.

However, many claim the engineers from the water board did not arrive to address the problem for six hours.

Resident Moshe Ortov said: “Banton is home to a number of elderly and chronically sick residents who require constant water supplies for various health and medical reasons.

“Despite this, Scottish Water has taken no action to safeguard the interests of these ill and disabled people and left them without water supplies at all.”

Moshe added: “There was no offer of assistance to the ill and disabled nor any suggestion of provision of alternate water supplies during the extended outage.

It was suggested people could phone the Scottish Water premium rate number for updates.”

When the supply was eventually restored, many villagers said their water was still not back to normal.

Another resident, who asked not to be named, said: “When it first happened it seemed one half of the village had no water at all and the other half had really low pressure.

“I turned my taps on and it was dribbling out so there was some supply there.

“I phoned them [Scottish Water] in the morning and I know plenty of others done the same when they realised.

“But they didn’t come out to start work on the problem until about one o’clock in the afternoon.

“The pressure has been weird and after they sorted it the water was coming out really white and fizzy.

“A lot of people have commented that they think it tastes funny as well.”

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “Scottish Water engineers attended a water rising on Mailings Road in the village of Banton following reports to our customer helpline in the early hours of Friday, July 8, morning.

“The repair was completed later that day.

“The significant leak however, exacerbated an issue at the local service reservoir, leading some customers to complain about the taste of their water.

“This issue was quickly resolved and the network returned to normal.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.”
