Baths appoint artists in residence for posterity

Govanhill Baths is celebrating 100 years since the laying of the foundation stone of the building — and looking to the public to furnish its archive with memories, pictures, artefacts and memorabilia.

Govanhill Baths Community Trust has appointed artist Ailie Rutherford and archivist Paula Larkin to take up an Autumn residency.

A spokeswoman told The Extra: “Paula is establishing a permanent archive that will house a collection of materials related to the building, it’s visitors, the campaign to save it, and it’s current use as a community hub.

“We are appealing to the public to donate or loan their photos, documents, medals and memories relating to the story of the baths.”

The project and artists in residence will also look forward and reflect what lies in store for the institution in the coming 100 years predicting what role the baths might play in the community in 2114.

Ailie invited members of the community to join her for a series of meals, where conversations about the future of the baths will also be on the menu.

The spokesman praised the project as an opportunity for members of the baths community to engage in the project as a window to the past and to the future.
